Our Methodology — How We Evaluate and Curate Lombok & Gili Islands Experiences

Our Curation & Evaluation Methodology

The promise of a perfect day on the water is easy to make, but exceptionally difficult to deliver. At Cruise Lombok, our reputation is built on a foundation of meticulous planning, rigorous evaluation, and an uncompromising commitment to quality. This methodology is the ‘how’ behind our promise, ensuring that every private charter we operate is not just a trip, but a flawlessly executed luxury experience. It is a system of checks and balances that guarantees safety, comfort, and authenticity.

Vessel Evaluation & Maintenance Protocol

Our fleet is the heart of our operation. Each vessel is selected and maintained according to a strict protocol that far exceeds local requirements.

  • Acquisition Criteria: We select vessels based on sea-keeping ability, build quality, passenger comfort, and engine reliability. We prioritize modern, fuel-efficient engines to minimize our environmental impact.
  • Weekly Systems Audit: Every week, each vessel undergoes a comprehensive 50-point inspection by our engineering team, covering engine performance, navigation systems (GPS, VHF radio), bilge pumps, and all safety equipment.
  • Monthly Deep Maintenance: Once a month, vessels are dry-docked for a thorough inspection of the hull, propellers, and shafts. All maintenance logs are digitized and reviewed by our Head of Marine Operations.
  • Safety Equipment Standards: All safety gear, including life jackets, life rafts, flares, and first aid kits, is SOLAS-compliant and inspected before every single departure. We maintain more equipment than is required by the Indonesian Directorate General of Sea Transportation (Ditjen Hubla).

Crew Selection & Continuous Training Rubric

A luxury vessel is only as good as its crew. Our team is our greatest asset, and we invest heavily in their selection and development. Our evaluation is based on a 100-point scoring system.

Criteria (100 Points Total) Description Weighting
Technical Certification Valid seamanship certificates (e.g., SKK, ANT), Basic Safety Training (BST), First Aid/CPR. 30 points
Local Knowledge Demonstrated expertise in Lombok Strait currents, Gili Islands’ reefs, and south coast anchorages. Assessed via practical examination. 25 points
Hospitality & Communication English proficiency, communication skills, and alignment with luxury service standards. Assessed via interviews and role-playing. 25 points
Safety & Emergency Response Performance in regular, unannounced safety drills (man overboard, fire, medical emergency). 20 points

Only candidates scoring above 85 are accepted. All crew members undergo quarterly refresher courses in safety and luxury service standards, ensuring their skills remain sharp. This process is managed by our expert leadership team.

Itinerary Design & Validation Process

Our itineraries are not static. They are dynamic, living plans crafted based on data, experience, and a commitment to providing the best possible experience on any given day.

  1. Data Analysis: We analyze tidal charts, seasonal weather patterns from BMKG, and marine life sighting data to create optimal routing. For example, we know the best times to visit Meno’s turtle sanctuary to avoid crowds and maximize visibility.
  2. Route Scouting: Before an itinerary is offered to guests, our senior captains and guides personally sail the route multiple times to validate timings, identify the best anchorages, and assess snorkeling/diving conditions. This includes our exploratory work for the upcoming 2026 Komodo route.
  3. Dynamic Optimization: On the day of the charter, the captain makes the final call based on real-time conditions, always prioritizing safety and guest comfort. If the wind is too strong at Pink Beach, they have pre-approved, equally stunning alternatives on the south coast.

Partner Audit & Vetting

While we manage the core cruise experience, we sometimes partner with third parties for specialized activities (e.g., advanced diving, catering from specific resorts). These partners are held to our own exacting standards.

  • On-Site Inspection: We conduct an annual, unannounced site visit to every partner to audit their safety procedures, hygiene standards, and customer service.
  • Compliance Check: We verify they hold all necessary local licenses (e.g., TDUP for tourism businesses) and insurance.
  • Sustainability Alignment: We assess their commitment to environmental responsibility, such as waste management and conservation efforts. Only partners who share our values are added to our preferred network.

This comprehensive methodology is our commitment to you. It is our guarantee that the Cruise Lombok experience is trustworthy, safe, and truly exceptional, a promise backed by verifiable processes and a culture of excellence.
